Snakes are edible in Bali! Aug 05

Well don’t go onto the titles, we are not talking about the literal venomous snakes that you would be served as a cuisine when getting onto a tour of Bali. Actually snake fruit is one of the tropical fruits found in Bali, often the most delicious one. It is named as snake fruit because it’s covered with scales, red- brownish in color, which look like snake skin from a distance and is always the oddest looking fruit you’ll ever come across.

The Salak is basically a fruit which is just about the size of a ripe fig and the shape of the salak is also quite similar to it. However, it is round and has a discrete tip which has to be held and peeled off to remove the edible pulp of the fruit. The interior of the fruit has three lobes with a large seed that is unpalatable. One would definitely find the lobes similar to the peeled garlic cloves.

Salak plant needs high temperature and humidity throughout the year and also high and continuous water requirement. Due to this requirements, Salak plantations in Bali are concentrated in central and east Bali especially Karangesm Regency, especially in the southern slope of the region.
