Preparing for a Hurricane When at the Beach May 11

An important concern to be aware of at some beaches during the summer is that hurricanes can be present. This is something that can be especially common in the southeastern part of the country. As a result of this it will help to be aware of a few things with regards to what can happen in the event that a hurricane comes by the beach.

It will help to watch for any sirens or flags that can come about when a hurricane is approaching. A siren will be one that is going to be loud and will work to symbolize that people should evacuate the beach as soon as possible. A flag, on the other hand, can be used to suggest to late arrivers that the beach is unsafe. A set of two square flags that are red with a small black box in each of them will be used as a symbol of a hurricane warning.

Be sure when arriving at a beach that one’s car has enough gas in it. This gas should be used as a means of making sure that a person will be able to evacuate an area without one’s car stalling. This is especially vital because of how the roads in an area can get to be crowded during the evacuation process. In addition to this most gas stations in an area will shut down when a hurricane comes. Being prepared ahead of time will be a good thing to do.

Another thing to do is to consider getting into a designated shelter area. There are various places around a beach that can be interpreted as a designated shelter. These include beach houses that are well off the shore, large department store areas and even some federal buildings.

The most important thing is that any object that can be easily blown away is avoided. The heavy winds of a hurricane can cause a person to be hit by a random object in the area. These include things like park benches or trash cans. It will help to be in a sturdy area that is free from any of these things when a hurricane approaches.

These are all tips to use when preparing for a hurricane at the beach. This is something that is not easy to think about but it always helps to prepare for the worst case scenario that can occur when at the beach.

Always Watch for Water Conditions At the Beach May 07

A good thing to do when heading out to the beach is to take a good look at the water conditions in one’s area. The water conditions are especially important in that they can be very dangerous at some times. There are many things to see with regards to the waters at the beach that one is going to.

A good thing to do is to take a look at the water temperature for the day. The water temperature should be somewhere between sixty and eighty degrees Fahrenheit. These are safe temperatures for swimming or enjoying the water.

In addition to this it will help to take a look at the high and low tides for the day. These conditions refer to when the water is going to be at its highest and lowest points of the day respectively. This is a good thing to do when planning a day at a beach because sometimes the area that one pitches a spot on the shore at could end up being underwater in just a matter of hours.

The next tip to use is to take a look at the waves that are coming about. In some cases rip currents, which are waves that can drag a person out into the water, can occur in severe cases. These currents can be very dangerous. It will help to consult a lifeguard at the beach to see if any of these currents are present.

In fact it will help to take a look at the flag that is being used on the beach. A warning flag will be posted along the beach as a means of stating the conditions of the water. If the flag is green then the water will be safe to go into. When the flag is yellow the conditions will be a little rough and caution should be considered. If a red flag is out then people will be strongly encouraged to stay out of the water due to rough conditions.

Finally there is the concern of water pests. These include such things as alewives that can float to the shore or jellyfish that can come out close to the beach. These creatures can be incredibly bothersome and should be reported if one sees them in an area. It will be best to avoid panicking in the event that a person does see any of these creatures when out at the beach.
